Realtors attend first Comic Con in Sonora, California
Sarah and I attended our very first Comic Con! And we liked it! And we have photos!
The Sonora Comic Con event was recently held on Memorial Day at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds in Sonora, CA. The event was the very first Comic Con to be held in the area, and was brought to us by the folks that put together the Turlock Comic Con. We like to keep up on local events and help spread the word on things to do in Calaveras & Tuolumne County, sooooo - what better excuse do we need to go and check it out, right? Here's what we experienced:
Sarah and I arrive at the fairgrounds, and we see cars. Lots of them! And people! And costumes! It was apparent that the event was drawing quite a crowd. After finding a parking spot and grabbing some camera gear, we set out to see what Comic Com is all about. We walk past a small stage area where a band is playing live music, then past a couple of food vendors, and we see people stopping to take photos with people in costume. Costumes were worn by attendees and vendors alike. Some were basic; others were extremely elaborate - obviously incorporating a lot of invested time, effort, and money.
Admission was a mere $6. per person, and required to enter the two buildings where the majority of the vendors were set up. Inside, we saw people selling comic, anime, and sci-fi related items of all kinds including such things as original artwork, prints, toys, comic books & collectibles, and even bath bombs, balloons, & backpacks! Guest celebrity Debbie Lee Carrington (of Starwars, Total Recall, Men in Black, & Batman Returns fame) was in attendance, offering autographed photos and memorabilia.
As luck would have it, we happened to be near the stage when we heard that the costume contest was getting ready to begin. I picked what I thought would be a good vantage point for some photos, and watched as cosplayers started lining up. What struck me most about the costume contest, was the difficulty encountered by the contest participants, when asked to announce their name, character, etc, before entering the stage. With the exception of a few, their voices shook, cracked, and stammered. Hey, I can totally relate. The fact that they powered through and overcame that anxiety to show their pride in their costume did not go unnoticed! Here are just some of the contestants below. If you, or someone you know was in the contest, we may have photos. Contact us, and we'll be happy to pass on copies to you!
Sarah and I enjoyed this event. The crowd was fun, friendly, and geared toward families. We sincerely hope that the people behind Turlock Comic Con are considering making it an annual event. You can follow them on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/TurlockComicCon/ Be sure to let them know if you enjoyed Sonora Comic Con 2017, and want them to bring it back next year!
In closing this blog post, we'll leave you with a few more photos, the way we left the event: With the Bed Heads playing on stage. Their sound is reminiscent of Nirvana, for those of us into grunge rock. Check their website (and sound) here.
Mike and Sarah are Realtors serving the Motherlode Areas of Calaveras & Tuolumne County. We want to share the area, it's people, and interests with others. If you know of an event that we should attend and share with others, please let us know! Feel free to share!
